Cooling towers are heat exchange systems that bring air and water into direct contact with each other in order to reduce the temperature of the water. To accomplish this, water is continuously pumped to the top of the tower, where it cascades over a series of baffles, mixes with air, and collects in either a basin located directly under the tower or a sump next to the tower. As heat and water escape the tower through evaporation, additional water must be periodically added to the system. Cooling towers come in a variety of sizes from rooftop systems to those the size of buildings or even larger. The typical water basin is open to the air, 4′ or less in depth, constructed of fiberglass, metal or concrete, and large enough in capacity to hold all of the water in the system. Cooling towers have two basic control systems, one to add liquid into the basin, and one to turn the water recirculation system on or off. The primary requirement for this application is to monitor the liquid level, automatically refill the basin, and prevent the system from running dry.

Use of ultrasound through water can eliminate up to 95% of the existing bacteria and algae and manage growth, thus reducing or eliminating the need of chemical dosing. Algae-free systems prevent the formation of new algae in both sessile and planktonic form.
Drastically reduced use of chemicals. Ultrasound also improves the reaction between chemicals and re-agents, to better effect, when necessary. When the algae and bacteria are drastically reduced through the use of the ALPHA system, we can drastically reduce, or even eliminate the requirements of chemical dosing.
Drinking water pipes and equipment are also especially exposed to biofilms. For example, biofilm in water can appear in an ordinary air conditioning plant and a chicken house, can become a reservoir for salmonella.
Legionella is a serious bacterial growth that is formed in the course of the water masses, namely when there is a higher CFU/mL level than the industry standard.
Legionella can cause severe health problems in humans when spread through air conditioning and through the use of Ultrasonic technology from ALGAEFREE the risk of legionella can be greatly reduced.

ELKEM install ALPHA 4-ways System in sea water reservoir intake June 2017
The problem that ELKEM Solar has been experiencing, is that we have been plagued with a large amount of mussels in the grates and in sea-water pipes, inside the factory. This caused the water temperature in heat exchanges to increase. As result, frequent and costly maintenance control, including regular cleaning of the pipes and grates was required.
Four months after the installation of ALPHA 4-ways. Visual inspection of the control suction pool (as well as an examination of other components to look at weather) there was a reduction number of mussels.
Maintenance Planning Manager, Gert Ivar Gundersen at Elkem Solar AS, said that after the installation almost no more mussels where present. The few mussels that remained, were already dead, as a result of the Ultrasound system. A noted effect, was a reduction of bio-film and algae on the walls, so the mussels can no longer get access to food.

Algae can grow in the cooling tower itself and on the grids from the tower. This could lead to enormous disadvantages of biofilm in cooling towers. Therefore, water used in cooling towers needs frequent treatment and chemical shocks to keep levels of micro-organisms to a minimum.
ALPHA ultrasound system allows to reduce chemical dosage up to 75% and offers local treatment were biofouling growth can’t be prevented with chemicals.
In a cooling system there are billions of bacteria which are held together by a slimy substance (EPS). The formation of a biofilm, or biofouling come into existence when the bacteria stops moving, settles down and becomes part of a biofilm. To this layer, other organisms such as algae, weeds, parasites, muscles or even barnacles may attach.
Due to biofouling- negative effects may occur such as increased chemical consumption, corrosion and increases in power requirements of the system.

What is bio film?
Biofilm is a coating of bacteria or microbes, which develop, due to an interaction between the surface and micro-organisms. Biofilm is an advanced community of micro-organisms (such as bacteria, fungi and viruses) which are wrapped in a self-generated, protective slime. Micro-organisms prefer a life of biofilm. We find biofilms everywhere in nature, where there is moisture and nourishment, indeed on the mucous membranes and other surfaces in the body.
The formation of biofilm occurs in water pipes, water tanks and the like. Usually they consist of relatively harmless micro-organisms, but can also allow contaminants to gain a foothold, grow and develop in these biofilm. Biofilm can thus become a reservoir of infection, both directly and indirectly, i.e. if the water is used in offices for the production of food.
We must develop new strategies to both, prevent unwanted biofilms and to remove the finished-formed biofilms. In addition, more knowledge about the ‘anti-biofilm effect’ of traditional methods, ‘bio-prospecting’ will become be important.
How it works
ULTRASOUND emit sound waves to create an environment of critical structural resonance. The resonance causes a very unique environment in the immediate vicinity as it can critically vibrate internal parts of green algae and diatoms causing them to internally tear apart preventing proper fluid flow. In blue-green algae, this effect causes gas vesicle tubes to break causing loss of buoyancy and they sink out of light.
